“The Wife Between Us” is filled with relatable characters with mysterious backgrounds that led them to this place where one woman is set to marry the ex of the other. Interestingly, the first four chapters tell us little about Richard, the prize they’ve each been awarded, except how perfect he is. About that much at least, the two women we meet agree. Richard is a charming, successful businessman with bank accounts as lavish as his Manhattan lifestyle. Vanessa, the ex desperately trying to move on after their divorce, shows us a glimpse of life married to Richard; lavish catered dinner parties, walk-in closets with designer clothes and thoughtful affections generously given on a daily basis. But Vanessa and Richard are divorced now. While Vanessa tells her aunt it was due to Richards infedelity with a younger model (Nellie), she alludes to her drinking problem and infertility as well. Nellie, too, despite being so in love with Richard, talks of how he is just too good to be true. What is Richard hiding? How and why does Vanessa fit into Richard’s future with Nellie? This sample left me wanting more and the mystery promised on the cover hasn’t even begun to unfold.
