The Wife Between Us is definitely twisty and compelling. As the publisher promises, "When you read this book, you will make assumptions." If you're a fan of books like Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train, you'll be on the lookout for the moment you begin to see a story behind the story. It comes well into the book, so that there's a satisfying "aha" moment when the story takes its first big turn from the expected. There are more surprises in store!

The characters are fully formed and believable. The women in jeopardy are certainly not victims. I'm not sure that the explanation of the husband/fiancé Richard's motive is as clear as it could be. Certainly, his menace slowly becomes more dangerous, to the point where there's a real "Don't go in the house!" moment when you as the reader can see as clear as day that Nellie shouldn't go to Emma's apartment. And Richard's sister's role in the story felt like a loose end to me.

The idea that we'll never really know even the people to whom we're the closest is a terrific premise for a quick, suspenseful read. Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen bring it to life, give it a lot of colorful, original detail, and leave their reader wondering how brave she'd be in a situation like this one. And it's not such a leap to think many of us could be there.
