Atmospheric and Suspenseful
Skillful suspense authors have the power to somehow infuse the cadence of their sentences with tension. I don't know how they do it, but it's a special talent. Hendricks and Pekkanen have it. The reader remains unsure whether the narrators are reliable, which gives her a feeling of wrong-footedness in the best kind of way. Some of the characters in "The Wife Between Us" experience mental illness and the depiction of that mental illness and addiction is spot-on. I was hooked on this book from the get-go and can't wait until I can finish it. The blurb tells us not to make any assumptions about any one character's role in the plot or anyone's motivations. Of course, I made assumptions and I'm desperate to know which ones will be proven wrong.
