This book was extremely interesting because it captures the mind in times of trouble and brings the question: how do we react when something serious has happened and no one believes us?

The beginning of the book is a little confusing. It flashes between two woman who are different, but suddenly not so different. This would be fine, but it becomes confusing when you realize that you have been reading the past and current thoughts of the same woman and the new wife hasn’t entered the story until much later. This back and forth helps further the plot, but it could have been clarified better to ease the possibility of confusion.

I loved the plot line of this book. It was interesting to watch how easily a person can be completely consumed by a significant other. It starts off feeling sweet and protective, then gradually twists into something more and more controlling. I feel like a lot of times we wonder how a woman could be so blind to a situation, but this book brings in more clarity of how easy it can be to slip into a relationship like that unknowingly.

I also loved the character development we see. Nell starts off as an insecure, but strangely trusting woman, and grows to become a strong and capable woman. She is able to not only escape her controlling husband, but then is able to push him to the point where he would be unable to do it to anyone ever again.

When you mix in some interesting background stories and family complexities, it all compiles together to make an interesting and excellent read. This book lacked a thrill element, but it was an interesting study into the mind.
