I really loved this book! I read it in the wee hours of the night until my eyes drooped shut. I am looking forward to more books from these ladies. I understand that Pekkanen normally writes in more of the “chick lit” genre and I think that is part of what makes this book so readable! The writing made this feel like a quick and light read, but the suspense had me sitting on the edge of my seat – what exactly is going on here? You’ll think you know and then you will be tossed into a completely different direction. A couple of times. It’s hard for me to write a lengthy review because I don’t want to give too much away…
Really, the synopsis tells us to “assume nothing,” referring to the twists in the plot, but that is actually one of the themes of the book as well. We see relationships and circumstances from the outside and we make our assumptions when we really have no clue what is going on underneath.
Aside from the great writing I also appreciated the psychological aspects of the story – with her mom having had psychological issues that gave her even more reason to doubt herself – and the main character who I found to be very likeable. Sometimes in stories of suspense the main character can be annoying or kind of a bad person, but this antagonist was easy to root for, especially as the story went on.
I’d recommend this book for those who liked Behind Closed Doors and The Girl on the Train. Though it’s maybe not quite as dark.
