The Whisper Man by Alex North

Tom Kennedy’s wife passes away and leaves him as a single parent to his young son, Jake. Tom and Jake move to a new town for a fresh start, but the new town has a haunted past. Frank Carter had kidnapped and murdered multiple young boys. Dubbed “The Whisper Man,” Carter would whisper through the bedroom windows of these boys before their disappearances. Now, more than twenty years later, in their new town, Tom’s son claims that he, too, has heard whispers at his bedroom window late at night...

This book initially started out giving me Charles by Shirley Jackson vibes... Jake’s behaviors led me to that one. Then it quickly picked up and changed into a mixture of Criminal Minds... the whole detectives working together to try and solve a case... (+ The Following...) with what seems to be a loose accomplice of Frank Carter’s out in the public... (+ The Silence of the Lambs...) where the former killer will only grant conversations behind bars with one specific detective, Pete Willis. This book had SO MANY LAYERS where you’re trying to figure out more than one thing at a time as the kidnapper strikes again. I really liked that the storyline was more about the mind of a killer as opposed to a weird and brutal abduction and what comes after. It was beautifully written and the suspense came as a slow (&creepy) burn, which I enjoyed. The only thing I didn’t like was that the book ended with a number of loose ends. 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
