'The Whisper Man' is Alex North's crime debut, and an impressive debut it is! Told in alternating voices, 'The Whisper Man' tells the story of Tom Kennedy and his son Jake who have moved to the small town of Featherbank after the unexpected death of his wife. He hopes that this new house and new town will be a fresh start for them, however, they soon learn that the town has a dark past.

"It's not going to be easy, and I need to start with an apology. Because over the years I've told you many times there's no such thing as monsters. I'm sorry that I lied."

Twenty years ago a serial killer named Frank Carter abducted and murdered five young boys, all of whom were lured by whispers at their windows at night - hence the nickname the Whisper Man. Coinciding with their move to Featherbank another young boy vanishes, and the circumstances around his disappearance bear eerie similarities to the Whisper Man case, including details that were never released to the public.

"If you leave the door half-open, soon you'll hear the whispers spoken. If you play outside alone, soon you won't be going home. If your window's left unlatched, you'll hear him tapping on the glass. If you're lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you."

Alex North does an excellent job crafting a story that feels so dark and sinister that feels like there has to be some sort of supernatural component. I found myself genuinely frightened for Tom's young son Jake when he begins to hear whispers at his window in the night. The story is full of twists and surprises the reader won't see coming and will keep you up late reading. I know I couldn't put it down. His characters are well crafted, with their own quirks and flaws that make you feel like these are real people, which makes the stakes in a novel like this seem even higher.

As a parent, I know I hugged my daughter close after reading The Whisper Man, but as a lover of thrillers and crime stories, I absolutely loved this book and can't recommend it enough.
