The Whisper Man weaves an intricate mystery intertwining with the relationship between father and son. Author, Alex North, does an excellent job of keeping you on your toes as you constantly try to figure out who the killer is. The moment you think you’ve got it all figured out, he flips you on your side and you’re left feeling like you’re at square one again. The book doesn’t cause frustration though. You’re moved smoothly along, the puzzle coming together piece by piece. Along with the overhanging mystery, you’re allowed to peer into the lives of father Tom Kennedy, his son Jake, DI Pete Willis, as well as, the unknown killer as they deal with, not only the terrors of the present, but the deep wounds and traumas of the past. As these characters flesh out, you see through the eyes of a child, ever understanding and self aware beyond his years as children often are, a father doubting his abilities as a newly single parent, and a detective still dealing with his demons, two decades old. You are opened to the inner worries and fears of these characters, constantly thick with the thoughts of “I am good enough?” North makes these character so tangible and engaging, it’s hard not to feel empathy for them all. As a debut novel, The Whisper Man will surely keep me and all others that find themselves unable to put it down looking for Alex North’s next suspense filled classic!
