After the sudden death of Tom Kennedy’s wife, Tom and his son Jake decide to uproot their lives and move to the town of Featherbank. The town has a dark history of its own. 20 years ago, five children were abducted and murdered by serial killer Frank Carter. Carter’s nickname was “The Whisper Man,” as he would whisper and lure children out of their homes and into his grasp.

Shortly after Tom and Jake move to Featherbank, a young boy suddenly vanishes. The missing boy reignites fear throughout the town, and it suddenly seems that history is repeating itself 20 years later. Oddly, Jake begins hearing whispers at night, but isn’t the Whisper Man in prison now?

This book is a wild ride. I was looking for something haunting to read, and this one definitely fits under that criteria. While I didn’t find myself having nightmares while reading this book, the storyline moves quickly, and it’s a book that’s easy to follow and finish in a couple of days.

I especially loved the father/son relationship between Tom and Jake. With Jake’s mother gone, Tom struggles to build a relationship with his son while battling insecurity about his parenting style. He wants to provide the best for his son, but also wants to respect Jake’s boundaries, especially when it comes to enduring grief. I think reading this book during the Halloween season would be more fun and s p o o k y, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and I am excited for the potential film adaptation that is bound to be terrifying.
