I am not one to get easily creeped out and North’s debut novel totally got me. I picked it up expecting a typical detective thriller and boy was I ever pleasantly surprised. I read this in 2 sittings. North masterfully weaves many themes into his characters' lives and creates a depth that can be difficult to come by in some mysteries.

Tom Kennedy moves away with his seven-year-old son, Jake, to get a new start after the unexpected death of his wife. Trying to escape their trauma, they move into a fixer-upper in Featherbend that has a dark past. Tom and Jake continue to uncover the layers of deceit and betrayal as their lives intersect with a cold case of child murders and abductions. Frank Carter, known as the “Whisper Man” by local children, is in jail after being charged with the murder of four local boys around Jake’s age. Carter continues to torture local authorities by refusing to reveal the location of his last victim’s body. While Carter is playing cat and mouse with the DI that put him in jail, another boy suddenly disappears.

Told from multiple viewpoints with just enough twists, The Whisper Man was unique in so many ways. North weaves in multiple subplots that deal with the grief, the paranormal and domestic abuse. I will be anxiously awaiting the publication of his second novel, The Shadows in July 2020!
