When Neil Spencer goes missing, the whole town of Featherbank turns out to try to find him. Detective Pete Willis, off duty, is among them - searching the quarry and praying for a minor accident and not something more sinister.

Twenty years ago, Willis headed up an investigation into several missing boys. They caught their man, Frank Carter, but the body of Tony Smith had never been found. To this day, Carter taunts Willis with his failure, keeping Willis in his clutches by keeping the information of Tony’s whereabouts just out of grasp.

Pieces of Neil Spencer’s case start lining up with Carter’s M.O. Carter had been dubbed the Whisper Man as his victims were heard whispering with someone late at night. Carter would use the whispers to groom his victims, and then abduct and murder them. But Carter is behind bars, so is the new villain a copy cat? Or is something more evil and frightening happening in Featherbank?

Shortly after Neil goes missing, Tom and his son Jake move to Featherbank for a fresh start. Tom’s wife, Rebecca, died about a year ago and expectedly, him and Jake are suffering and are learning their new normals. When Jake sees the house online as Tom is house hunting, he becomes fixated. It’s the first thing Jake has been excited about in months so Tom concedes even though the house gives him a weird feeling. Once in Featherbank, Tom learns that the house was actually dubbed “the scary house” by locals, though no one can articulate why or recall anything actually horrible happening there. But as mysterious things begin happening and Jake retreats more and more with his imaginary friends, often overheard whispering with them behind closed doors, Tom wonders if there is some truth to the local nickname.

This novel was creepy and a real page turner. There were plenty of twists, most not overly shocking but still well developed and exciting. I definitely recommend it and I’m very much looking forward to North’s next novel, The Shadows!
