After reading this first look, I absolutely understand why Alex North's The Whisper Man is receiving so much buzz in the book community.

My title for this response emphasizes North's treatment of theme(s). He complicates the horror of a serial killer narrative by also telling a story of love and grief and pain. However, I'm not just captivated by the themes - I'm captivated by the WRITING, by author's craft and structure. The opening, the 'letter' to Jake, is amazing; I'm caught as a reader immediately. Also, look at the transition between chapters one and two!

I predict that The Whisper Man will be a hard book to put down - even after readers are finished.

This is an eye-catching book cover, but it does hold greater meaning, for me, now that I have a sense of the story to unfold. Now that I'm aware of the threat to children, the dark hand print, which resembles a child's finger painting, takes on a sinister edge.
