Looking for a fluffy romantic read? Better yet, a fluffy romantic #ownvoices read?

One of the worst things is going to a wedding alone, right? Well, let’s try alone at your ex’s wedding to your best friend where you’re a groomsmen and you RSVPd that you would have a date. In The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory, the protagonist Alexa finds Drew in this predicament when they get stuck in an elevator together when the power goes out in the hotel. After some convincing to go she agrees to be his date and a long distance “what are we-ship” catapults from there.

This book had me smiling and laughing, and wanting to shake the characters sometimes, like any good fluffy romance novel would. There were even some steamy moments too (not 50 shades of grey steamy, just a little steamy). But, what I liked most were the pockets where Guillory touched on issues that black people face when dating people who are white: the slightly awkward times the person you’re dating doesn’t realize their own privilege, being the only black/colored person in the room, the “where are you really from” questions, etc. I felt myself relating to a lot of these moments, having been in several interracial relationships, and I think she really portrayed them right, but in a way that didn’t take away from the romance and fluff of the novel, the small moments where they occurred made me laugh in agreement more than anything.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone needing a summer read!
