It has a cliche beginning: Boy and girl meet in an elevator when it gets stuck. Next thing you know, they're pretending to date for reasons (in this case, so he doesn't attend his ex-girlfriend and best friend's wedding--and of course, there's more to that story--alone). I'm pretty sure I've seen multiple TV movies using at least one aspect of that set-up.

However, rather than be bogged down by a common concept, The Wedding Date shines once it moves forward from that. I found myself rooting for Alexa and Drew to get their act together ASAP and liked the people in their lives. While it would have been nice to flesh out some of their friends a bit more and I was surprised at how willing they were to fly to see each other so soon after meeting, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading The Proposal when it comes out.
