Jasmine Guillory writes the best contemporary romances today. I fell in love with her writing when I read "The Wedding Date." Alexa, an attorney working the mayor of Berkley, meets Drew, a pediatrician from LA, in a hotel elevator. On a whim, Drew invites Alexa to play his girlfriend as his plus one to the wedding of his ex. From the beginning, Drew and Alexa find themselves drawn to each other but are afraid to admit to each other or themselves.
I love Jasmine Guillory's female characters because they feel so real and relatable. It's refreshing to read romance novels centered around Black women and Alexa is one of my favorite protagonists. Beyond her relationships with Drew, we learn about Alexa's friendships with Maddie and Theo (who are the leads in Guillory's book the Wedding Party) and her quest to start an arts program for young people.
This is the book I recommend to all friends who are looking to try their first romance and I have my fingers crossed Netflix makes it a movie.
