The characters and setting are phenomenal. I love how the author creates her worlds- they are rich with so many details and aspects. The culture, history, agriculture, and everything else are delicately woven into the main story, so you really feel like you’re in the moment with the characters and know the places well. The world is mostly covered in water after a huge flood from the icecaps, so people live on floating cities connected to islands for the crops.

The expression of different emotions- especially grief, love, anger, and guilt are really powerful in this novel. The Vanishing Deep centers around a main character, Tempest, who has lost not only her parents, but her only sister, to the ocean. She is fueled with anger about possible lies and secrets she may never get the truth about. Lor, the other point-of-view, feels extreme guilt for the passing of his best friend and has hidden away from the world because of it. The emotions of all of the characters run deep and true.

It’s always interesting to see how different people and situations can evolve a character in a way they couldn’t before, and you can just feel how Lor and Tempe are missing pieces for each other. The evolutions the characters go through as they realize things about their world and themselves is incredible and wonderfully paced.

This novel doesn’t feel too rushed in any aspect, which is really important when it essentially all happens within the span of twenty-four hours.

Also this novel was really good at punching me right in the emotions. I really can’t wait to get the final version and read that!!!
