Tempe doesn’t have anyone left in the world and she is desperate to know why. Tempe lost the last of her family when her sister, Elysea, drowned two years earlier and has been scrapping a living together diving for ruins to sell since then. Living in a world composed almost entirely of water, there is little in Tempe’s life that is untouched by the ocean. After hearing from one of her deceased sister’s friends that Elysea had something to do with her parents’ deaths, Tempe at last has a way to find some answers. When she finally saves up enough money to pay Palindromena (a research company that deals in life and death) for the service of reviving her sister for twenty-four hours, Tempe hopes she may at last be able to find some answers. But all is not as it seems, and darkness lurks underneath every wave.

You can get your copy of The Vanishing Deep today from Putnam Books for Young Readers!

Astrid Scholte has cemented her place as one of my favorite authors with The Vanishing Deep! The aquatic setting was a refreshing (pun intended) change from the many other books I’ve read recently! Scholte’s ability to weave mystery into her sci-fi/fantasy books makes them extremely engaging, and near impossible to put down! The stakes are supremely high for each character and every action is clearly motivated. I also quite enjoyed the dual perspective in The Vanishing Deep, as it heightens the story by giving it two sides.

My Recommendation-
If you think that sci-fi could use a bit more mystery interwoven, or if you love the high stakes of a thriller, The Vanishing Deep will be perfect for you! This book would also be great you love the ocean and unique settings! I personally loved the sibling bond shown in the narrative, and would recommend this to fans of Atlantia by Allie Condie!
