Palindromena, the only island around, in a world that was devoured in the "great wave," is also the only place to go, to bring back the dead... but only for 24 hours. Tempe, has been spending all of her spare time diving, so she can bring back her sister who died 2 years ago, as she died with the secret of her parents death, who died 5 years ago. She told her friend that it was her fault that they were dead, and Tempe needed to know why and how.

Once Tempe's sister, Elsea, realizes that she was revived, she has plans of her own, which require Tempe to break her out of Palindromena. They succeed but employees from Palindromena are right on their tails, and will do whatever they have to, to bring Elsea back before it is too late.

This was a creative story of fantasy, in a changed world, in which there is not enough of anything to go around. The reefs spend all their time fishing, but that also means that even the supply of fish are dwindling... which is almost all the people have to eat, as there is no way to grow anything on the reefs, which are made up of boats tied together to create a place for people to live. Palindromena is the only place that crops are grown, but this is an expensive process, that requires the revival program to survive. Everything in this world is dependent on something else, and family is everything.

I was caught up in this story immediately and plowed through it in 2 days. I loved the was that Scholte built her characters and made them alive and dancing for the reader. The story going between Tempe and Lor, one of the employees from Palendromena allowed the reader to see things from different angles and helped the story flow well. I do not want to say too much, but if you like fantasy and stories of other worlds, you will love The Vanishing Deep.
