The synopsis of this book sounds so unlike anything I have ever read. At first, I didn't think I would be interested. I just recently read another Water World-esque novel (After the Flood) and wasn't really wanting another post-apocalyptic read. However, I was NOT expecting the twist about bringing dead loved ones back to life for 24 hours, and I especially was not expecting Tempe to decide to do so out of vengeance! The author wrote a note about how she was inspired to write this book after a character in a TV show made a comment about wishing she could have one more day with her late husband. What an incredibly unique and haunting setting she chose for such a novel!

As for the sample itself, I appreciate how easy this read is. It moves swiftly, but it does not feel juvenile or simplistic. It just has an easygoing flow. Not much has happened plot wise in the excerpt given, so I am counting on the rest of the book being as imaginative as the synopsis promises.

My only issue with the book is that I thought Lor was a girl all the way up until the point when Ray talks to Lor about his party and how Lor could've met some cute girls. Ray is gay, and at this point I was unsure about whether Lor was a lesbian girl or a straight guy. I suppose I just thought Lor was a feminine-sounding name. I actually wasn't able to find anywhere in that chapter any reference to Lor's gender besides one instance where Ray addresses Lor as "bud." It really just threw off my whole inner visualization of that chapter, so I had to skim through it again to sort of reset myself.

I have really high hopes for this novel, and the reviews I've seen have been overwhelmingly positive, so I am claiming a copy for points.
