I was hardly past page one and I could feel it - feel that drive to know what Astrid Scholte's 'The Vanishing Deep' will tell us readers about the cycle of life, death. I predict this story will be a propulsive, can't-put-down, but thought-provoking YA read.

Questions I have (so far!):
- Why a WATER world? ...I tend to connect water with life, or even more specifically new life. Will this thinking "link in" to the message(s) of the story?
- Why the reference (or maybe motif?) of "palindrome"?
- Why place the relationship between sisters at the story's center?

Beyond the emerging story ideas/themes, Scholte's writing style and structure choices (e.g. use of time) make 'The Vanishing Deep' a must-read for me.

Before closing... I think the book cover is beautiful (albeit kind of unnervingly so)! The cover character's gaze is so direct, unwavering, even as light from the water bends and breaks across her profile.
