Intriguing premise ... Promising first chapters
I was surprised to find that The Vanishing Deep actually has a dystopian setting - some mash-up of Waterworld and something out of a Neal Shusterman novel. This is not evident from the book cover, title, or tag line. But I was pleasantly surprised! I think this setting and premise are really original and intriguing.
Scholte introduces the reader to this setting, the concept of "resurrection," and two different characters struggling with the death of loved ones in the first two chapters. This exposition was a bit overwhelming, and I would have been OK spending one more chapter with Tempest before moving on to a new character. But I like the juxtaposition of the two characters' initial states of mind - seeing how they are different and alike before their paths cross.
I'm definitely interested! Can't wait to read this!
