Yet another entry into the ranks of dystopian future novels, The Vanishing Deep combines the interesting setting of a water world, the creepy sci-fi scenario of reanimating the dead for 24 hours, and a murder mystery. We first meet Tempe, who wants to reanimate her sister to find out how their parents died. She comes off as a bit dark but determined. I found chapter 2's Lor, guilt-ridden over his part in his best friend's death, more intriguing. He works in the reanimation facility despite his discomfort around dead bodies to atone for his guilt. I'm definitely curious to see where his tale and Tempe's intersect.

While I like the cover, I imagine the girl is supposed to be Tempe but doesn't fit the description of her having "deeply tanned olive skin." If it's supposed to be Tempe's sister, she'd have the same skin tone as well.
