Good to see more from Astrid Scholte! While I didn’t love Four Dead Queens’ eventual world-building, I did appreciate the uniqueness of the story and the character dynamics at play. The Vanishing Deep seems even more ambitious as far as premise and setting go, and I really liked the characters we’re introduced to so far, Tempe and Lor.

The cover looks great, love the color story. I usually don’t like faces on covers, I feel like it takes something away from the reader in imagining a character, but this one doesn’t bother me. I’m left wondering which character is being depicted, but based on her stance I think I have an idea..

While it’s clear that elements of the book will be in part a commentary on climate change, based on the flooding of the planet, I’m hopeful it’s also going to touch on the healthcare industry and biomedical science. Especially with the recent debates on the UK’s NHS vs the American private insurance model, I think based off of Lor’s chapter there could be some parallels with how people’s health and lives are a means to profit for an incomprehensibly powerful company. Paired with ethical questions around life extension, the dead’s bodily autonomy and when a person is even considered ‘dead’, there’s a lot to be excited about here. I’m eagerly anticipating this March 2020 (ugh) release!
