This is a crime novel that also explores the depths of family relationships and how individual members of the family deal with grief. Jason French is a Vietnam vet who has been incarcerated for drug-related charges. Upon his release, he reconnects with his brother, Gibby, who is a high school senior. Their father is a police officer who has been estranged from Jason. It took a while for the crime element of the novel to emerge, and there are several scenes that are not for the faint of heart. The story slowly reveals the truly evil person who is behind the violence and the reader learns that Jason may not be the person he appears to be. This is a novel that kept me turning pages and thinking about how far family members will go to save one another.
