John Hart has long been one of my favorite authors. His hometown is about fifty miles away, and he typically writes with subtle references to the area. The Unwilling takes place primarily in Charlotte, North Carolina in the 1960s with additional scenes set on Lake Norman, Lanesworth (Lanesboro?) Prison, and a mention of the Sandhills.

The character-driven novel is narrated by several well-developed voices. The quick shift from voice to voice is done at just the right time to keep the reader engaged and the pages turning. This powerful thriller exposes the long-term effects of war, death, and prison. It exposes prison corruption and war cover-ups. It exposes family dysfunction and the power of money.

By his own admission, Hart looks for the light in dark places. This story carries a dark and gruesome plot at the same revealing the lengths one will go for justice and protection of their loved ones.

Just read it. You will not be disappointed.
