This book has some of the best writing I've seen. The characters leap off the page, even the dead brother the reader has never met. The mother's grief at losing this brother is exceptionally vivid - she manages to punish everyone for his death. There is an undercurrent of danger and anger from the very beginning, filling each line with tension.
