I don’t know how such a few amount of pages could affect me so greatly, but here I am wiping away a few tears having read this excerpt. This is the story of a broken family and war. The perspective shifts easily between the different characters, and each character adds a new complexity to the already complicated relationships being laid out before us in the telling of this crime. We don’t actually get the crime yet, but we do meet a detective, who is the head of this family that was destroyed by the draft for the Vietnam war. The writing is so smooth and flowing it’s like you feel swept up in the emotions and actions of the story effortlessly. This is not my usual genre, but I am thoroughly interested in seeing where this goes.
