The Tubman Command starts out with Harriet thinking about her husband John that she hasn't seen for a number of years. At this time, she is already working for the Union as a spy. Reading Harriet's story about how she had to leave her child and her husband behind when she ran away was absolutely heart breaking. I don't know if I would have had the strength to do what she did. I cannot wait to read more of The Tubman Command and see if she was able to go back and save her child. I really hope she was about to reunite with her child during her lifetime.
I really liked how Cobbs utilized the Gullah dialect to show how people in this region spoke. It feels a lot more historically accurate than having the characters speak the Queen's English. Telling Harriet's story in this first hand account that includes dialog is much more interesting than a typical re-telling of Harriet Tubman's life story.
