This is historical fiction at its best- well researched and well written! I confess that I only knew about Harriet Tubman as an Underground Railroad leader who led slaves to freedom. This story takes place in 1863 during the Civil War when she was already well known as Moses and respected by many. This book centers on her role as a spy and scout for for the Union Army during the Civil War. Harriet is in charge of black scouts who help the Union to carry out a large naval raid on the Canbahee River near Beaufort, South Carolina. This is a true period of history that freed over 700 slaves and weakened the Confederacy. A love interest with one of the scouts (which was probably the “fiction” in historical fiction) made her a real person with feelings and not just a famous historical character She was a strong determined women and I found her life to be fascinating.
