I am so glad I read this book. We only learn about Harriet Tubman's involvement with the underground railroad (not that it isn't impressive in and of itself) but I learned so much more about her in this novel. It makes me want to read a full biography of her now (which I've already purchased :-) ). Harriet is not only a woman in a man's world, but a black woman in a white man's world, but she doesn't let this stop her. She is determined to save as many souls from slavery as she can and she uses her whits, determination and charms to get the Union commanders to trust her. She come up with idea for a stealth mission into Confederate territory to destroy rice fields and raid plantations, winding up saving close to 800 slaves from bondage. Though not much is written about this raid, Elizabeth Cobbs brings this event to life in this exciting and wonderful historical fiction. Can't wait to read more by this author.
