I love reading novels based on what we know about historical figures, particularly when that historical figure is as fascinating as Harriet Tubman. We all learn about her role in the Underground Railroad, but this amazing woman played a crucial role in the Civil War as well. That is what this novel focuses on, and Cobbs engrosses the reader in 1863 South Carolina. While the main plot theme is the freeing of enslaved people from plantations in an effort to enlist freed men in the Union Army, it was interesting to explore the complex reality of being a newly free black man or woman. Tubman's story is a fascinating one, and this piece of historical fiction reveals of glimpse into a small period of her life.
