I knew Harriet Tubman and her part on the Underground Railroad, but I had no clue she was a spy for the Union. She led men in scouting out enemy positions. I enjoyed how the author brought Harriet to life for me. She was a normal person who was given the strength to escape slavery, even leaving her husband behind since he was a free man and he did not want to go north. She then went back for over 90 others, spoke to white audiences to push for the end of slavery. A woman who never learned to read. The book starts in South Carolina and a plan to free slaves, recruit male slaves to fight for the Union, and to flood rice fields, harming the Rebels food chain. Harriet has a part in every step of this raid, while selling gingerbread, root beer, and running a laundry for freed slave women so they could have a skill. An amazing read.
