This book only covers a slice of Harriet Tubman’s life when in 1863 she helped the Union Army plan the rescue of hundreds of South Carolina slaves. However in that sliver of time Cobbs shows us glimpses of Tubman's past that brought her to this moment, as well as creating a nail-bitingly urgent mission that makes you forget for a moment that events happened in the past and that we already know the outcome of the war. Very much a work of fiction but historical fiction of the best kind as I felt closer to Tubman as a person rather than only as a historical icon. Cobbs makes you feel what a lonely burden it must have been to be have been born with such strength, courage, and conviction. I was left hungry to learn even more.
