The real and tragic times of the slavery in the South should never be forgotten, but the thin line between education and entertainment can easily be smeared and works of fiction that bridge that line give me a bit of hesitation. That opinion stays with me whenever I open a novel depicting the lives of a real historical figure. A real person. That being said, the opening to this book is very engaging. Already introduced to tragedy, Harriet Tubman is portrayed as strong, motherly, protective and heroic. All the qualities I'm sure she truly had. In most novels portraying the lives of slaves, I'm sure we'll see the uglier side of history in the South, but through the character of Harriet created by Elizabeth Cobbs, I'm excited to see a new version of her story that continues to solidify her memory as the inspiration and strength she truly was.
