AMAZING!
It is obvious that Elizabeth Cobbs has done extensive research into the life of Harriet Tubman. This book, while a novel, provides little fiction and a lot of fact. The quotes before each chapter lend credence to her amazing story. Although most of us know that Harriet Tubman was a major player on the Underground Railroad, I believe few of us know the extent of her other contributions to history.
From the opening pages I felt as if I was there and could see everything that Harriet saw and felt. This was such a terrible time in our history and the author does a masterful job of letting us in on the emotions of despair and helplessness that the "contraband" went through on a daily basis.
This is a book I will remember for a long time. The picture it paints, while dark and desperate, gives a sense that fairness and equality will prevail as long as we have people committed to that goal!
