I was eager to read Elizabeth Cobbs' The Tubman Command after hearing so much about her bestseller, The Hamilton Affair. I don't know that much about Harriet Tubman, so I was eager to learn more about her and her work to free slaves and help the Union during the Civil War. However, I just couldn't get into the novel. While I liked the excerpt I read, when it came to the novel, I found the story very slow.

I enjoy historical fiction, but to truly enjoy a book, I need the story to come alive with characters that feel like flesh and blood. The Tubman Command is not poorly written, but it lacks that spark that makes me want to keep reading. I did appreciate the quotes that began each chapter and am still interested in learning more about Harriet Tubman.
