I thoroughly enjoyed this book and everything about it — from the cover to the characters. Jake is a medium who is forced to deal with certain evils. He has experienced some past traumas that exasperate things sometimes. Jake is also gay and is struggling to come out. Lastly, his biggest conflict is being haunted by a former school shooter, named Sawyer. Eventually, Jake is able to defeat Sawyer and his evils. However, much of the story builds to this point as Jake is tormented by Sawyer.
I think this book addresses a lot of current social issues as well. Jake is a black gay youth for one. Mental health issues are arguably present in this book as well. As a teacher and a member of my school’s Student Assistance Program, I valued the opportunity to read this book. I definitely have high expectations for this YA thriller novel heading into its Summer 2021 release.
