ok so there are some books which are just very hard to review and i think this is one of them, so i’m not even going to try (for now, at least)
so instead, some thoughts i had while reading because I have actually read this book already through ARC:
•one of my only reasons for not giving it five stars is that i found the writing hard to visualise at some points - maybe this is because i haven’t read that many horror novels, so i would say this was very much a me issue - i did LOVE the writing though
•relating to this, and this is kind of random, but a constant thought i had throughout all of reading this?? it felt like this would be SO much more suited to something in a visual medium, i don’t know why, i just found it was hard to convey much of an atmosphere in written format
•i didn’t expect this to be a horror novel!!! because i am a stupid!!! so i probably wasn’t prepared, especially for the gore, but you know what i loved it so that was ok
•another reason i didn’t give it five stars is it felt quite slow for quite a long time and, while as i previously said i LOVED the writing, it took a little while to get used to - the narration and style of writing changed around a lot throughout the book and this took a moment to adapt to
•it was genuinely very scary at a lot of points
•it was also really, really beautiful
•this book is so incredibly important and you should almost definitely read it
again, i am a stupid, so i forgot to write down trigger warnings while reading - i’ll try and remember and maybe do a skim reread again at some point so i can add them here
