YA social thriller starring a Black teen medium
The Taking of Jake Livingston begins with a kid dying during PE class... except that actually happened 40 years ago, Jake just sees it on a loop. He sees the dead (as a medium) and he's the only Black eleventh grader at a prep school.
Chapters alternate between Jake and Sawyer, who describes a past suicide attempt and struggles with mental illness. From Jake's perspective, the reader learns that Sawyer goes on to fire on classmates before taking his own life. Now Sawyer's ghost has skipped its death loop and managed to kill more people - but only Jake can see this.
