The cover of The Taking of Jake Livingston immediately caught my attention. As someone who picks up a book based on it’s cover, I found myself wanting to grab for this selection immediately. The shocked look on the man’s face, the alluring hands behind him, and the chosen font all made me want to dig deeper into what was inside the cover!

After reading the synopsis, I was more intrigued. The Taking of Jake Livingston is a combination of thriller and horror with a side of romance. It also adds elements of race and sexuality. This young adult book is one that I think many will find they will be excited to read this summer!

Once I got to read the first few chapters of The Taking of Jake Livingston, I was sucked into Jake’s world. Jake is a medium. He sees the dead around him all the time, and we are met by that instantly on page one. These ghost are in a reoccurring loop which makes it difficult for Jake to separate the living from the dead.

Another surprise to this book is it is written in different point of views! It is written in Jake’s point of view and the point of view of Sawyer Deon, the antagonist of our story. Sawyer’s POV is written before his death and horrific crime.

These chapters left me wanting more! I will definitely be purchasing Ryan Douglass’ debut novel. I can’t wait to see what happens to Jake and what trouble Sawyer causes!
