Powerful YA coming-of-age novel with a spooky twist
Right from the attention-grabbing first line, I was intrigued by this story. Jake's narrative voice is strong and really puts the reader in his shoes. This is a powerful YA coming-of-age story depicting the emotions of teenagehood as well as the realities and everyday traumas of being a black boy in a very white environment. I loved the beautiful, simple description of Jake's friendship with Grady, and I hope that is shown more as the book develops. I'm intrigued by the narrative switch from Jake's story to Sawyer's. I liked Jake's better but I imagine we'll learn more about Sawyer as the book continues.
