Most Anticipated, Most Disappointing?
A. I like that we have Jakes brother because it allows Jake to not be the only only Black kid at the school and his brother is different from him. I also think we do not have enough Black male point of view (and authors) in ya literature. Thus we do not have Black men relationships shown enough.
B. Jake sees ghosts which is interesting to start from the jump with.
C. I don’t know how I feel about how he treats his friend- then again is his friend a bigot?
D. So non-Black people touch Black boys hair too. See this is why we need more of the Black male point of view because we are missing experiences.
E. There is a lot of telling that could be a problem later because we are not sitting in the story the Jake is walking around telling us stuff.
F. I do find the inclusion of school shooting interesting vs police brutality in a Black ya novel.
G. It is kind of dark I notice.
H. There is a lot of introduction and not enough living in the story.
I. I am going to be honest here I already requested it because it is one of my most anticipated books of this year and last year. However, I do not like it. Why is it written in a way that is not fun? I don’t know if they going to revoke my request but I do not like it.
J. It just does not have pizzaz no fun voice.
