WOW!!! I am still reeling from this one. I absolutely LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! For those who want to know, yes, The Sunbearer Trials = Percy Jackson meets The Hunger Games but make it a trans/queer Mexican-inspired mythology! Really though, it is so much more than that! It's in a category all its own and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book in this duology! (Yes, I realize I'll be waiting quite some time as this one just released TODAY!) Also, this cover is gorgeous!!!
Teo, the 17-year-old trans Jade semidios son of Quetzal is looking forward to attending the Sunbearer trials so he can experience the different sights, sounds, and foods of the temple cities in Reino del Sol, where one semidios is chosen as the Sunbearer and another is chosen as the sacrifice to fuel the Sun Stones. He never expected to be picked because only Golds get to compete, but he was oh so wrong about that when he and another Jade semidios, Xio, find that they are chosen as competitors. Ten chosen semidioses compete in five trials in this action-packed and delightful story. I was cheering for Teo, Xio, and Niya throughout, and by the end had actually started to like Aurelio too. But then comes the TWIST and the CLIFFHANGER ending! WHAT?!?!?!?!!!!
I cannot recommend this book enough! One of my top 5 reads this year for sure. :-)
