As someone who loves mythology, I was immediately immersed into the rich new lore created by the author as the powers of Sol and Tierra keep the dark gods at bay. The Sunbearer Trials is a way to keep the balance in check in a very Hunger Games sort of way, though there can be more survivors. Like most god and demigod lore, heirachy plays a large role and it intrigues me how the underdogs will fight for surival as they are thrust into the world of the strong, partly a place of privelege they have been denyed due to their "jade," not "gold" status. The story starts with the 'jades" already having to deal with difficult events and play the unlikely heroes. What happens when a "jade," or two, gets thrust into a competition with the best of the best, when the consequences are permanent. The suspense and intrigue right from the get gone remind me of Rick Riordan and I have high hopes for this story.
