A gruesome murder marrs the otherwise steller reputation of Westmont Prep boarding school. It's believed the perpetrator was identified, but of course there are questions, such as the subsequent suicides and curiosities in the evidence collected that night. We follow Rory and Lane as they work with the original detective to add up the missing pieces of what happened that night. Meanwhile, true crime journalist and blogger Ryder Hillier is off on a tangent that may lead her to the answers she needs to reclaim her job and credibility.

A great premise. Rory and Lane work well together. Ryder gets a good introduction, she's a more relatable character than Rory. I found myself waiting to get back to her journey. I'm so happy to see the return of Gus, I thoroughly enjoyed the character in Don't Believe It and felt he had more stories to tell. I'd love to see him play a larger role in a future book, and the ending here leads me to believe that's a real possibility. I also enjoy how each book connects and characters return to give another glimpse into their lives.

I had a couple of questions during this. Why/how were these students chosen for initiation? Why does the school insist on counseling for students? Not important to the story but just background things I wondered about while reading.

I enjoy the way this author intercuts the present timeline with snippets of the past. It not only doles out information and builds suspense, it keeps the story from dragging. Although the pace here is slower than previous books, the technique serves to keep things interesting.

There's lots of suspense and tantalizing hints. Though it's not difficult for the reader to connect the dots, the author found a way to weave together several storylines to converge in a satisfying conclusion.

I look forward to the next installment from Charlie Donlea.
