A part of growing up is telling ghost stories to scare each other. I think all kids had a rendition of "The Man in the Mirror," a creepy legend of a man who'd come to kill you if you satisfied the requirements of the "game" and said his name in a mirror several times. This nostalgic layer of the plot added both comfort and terror for me. The book immediately drew me in with the twisted journal entry about a boy killing his brother. Then, it kept drawing me in further, adding layers to a story that I'm unsure how will fit together at the outset. The true crime podcast element adds an extra layer of consumer interest and reminds me of I Know You Know by Gilly Macmillan, a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Even further, the budding rivalry (could it be a hate-to-love trope?) feeling from Ryder and Mack was enjoyable. We're only briefly introduced to what I assume are some of the other main characters (since they're heavily featured in the synopsis) in the later segment of this first look. I look forward to seeing how all these characters and plot lines tie up. Super excited!!
