Overall it’s a fun, exciting adventure but it was full of holes and missing a good background.
Pros: Buc and Eld are a great duo and Buc is hilarious. I love her fire and her attitude! The story was exciting involving magic and pirates.
The book seems to take off from the middle, we almost don’t get a background of the characters or where they come from.

As the story progresses we learn a little more about them, how Eld found Buc in the streets and they helped each other but it never feels like you get to know them fully. It made it hard to concentrate on the story because I was focused on all the missing detail.

As I kept reading I got more engaged because there’s a lot of action and pirates but again it always felt like I was missing something. The author has them reference past cases but we never get those full details and it muddled the story.
Buc is supposed to be like Sherlock and I can see that in some parts because of her attention to detail but overall it seemed like she would get lucky and get information she needed to solve her case. They just happened to stumble across a dying man who pointed them in the direction of Chan Sha and then Chan Sha just happens to come for the ship Buc and Eld stowed away on. It all just seemed like one giant coincidence rather than Buc solving all the great mysteries.

It’s a fast paced, fun adventure with pirates and ghost ships and mages.
