It's 1944 and Maria is trying to get home to her family after escaping from a labor camp. One night after many days of traveling she finds an old barn to stay in for the night. During the night 5 soldiers and a prisoner also decide to use the barn for the night. The soldiers are questioning the prisoner and end up shooting him in the knee to talk. Maria shoots 4 of the soldiers and wounds the 5th to save Kostya.
They eventually find her brother, Tomek and hide with him and his group. When Tomek leaves on a mission and isn't back after 3 weeks, Maria goes to look for him. She takes Kostya to help her and tells him that he must help or his family will suffer the consequences.
They do find her brother and they start to actually like each other along the way.
I would have liked to read a few more pages to confirm they made it to safety.
I thought it was a good book and it was very interesting to read as something was always happening.
