To start, I was immediately attracted to this book cover over the other picks for this week. It feels broody and mysterious, which is way up my alley. I was easily invested in this book from the beginning and couldn't believe how fast I reached the end of the First Look. It speaks of an intense subject but is really quite easy to read/digest. I was left with a strong feeling of anger, almost bordering on hatred for the character Kyrylo (and because I couldn't finish the book right away. Ha! )which is a sign of really great writing. This book is ironically coming out in the midst of very real conflict between Russia and the Ukraine which heightens the emotions felt about the subject matter at hand. It reminds you that things like this have happened and could be happening right NOW.
If you're into page turners and historical fiction this seems like a go-to. I CANT wait to see what Kostya will do, specifically!
