These two sample chapters set up the tension and established sympathetic characters. I especially liked Maria and sympathized with her desire to get back to her home and her family despite the dangers. I felt for Kostya too, though, as he was stuck in a dangerous situation with apparently no way out. I would like to see how things turn out for these characters.
